This is so accurate, and your advice is sound for people who want to monetize on the platform as it stands today. I think this is a bug rather than a feature, though. Medium markets itself to writers as a platform *for* writers. But it’s not. It’s a platform for marketers and content creators. While that is good for those people—and for Medium’s market share and bottom line—I don’t think it creates a space that encourages producing writing that is worth reading. I get my Medium Daily Digest every day, and every day I see five versions of the same article (sorry, Medium, but “10 Ways to Make Bank on Medium” is NOT a “story”) that have already been regurgitated ad nauseam on this platform. I think that if Medium wants to create something really special—something that leaves a real mark and a real legacy—then it needs to start focusing on promoting and encouraging quality writing rather than clickable content. Don’t get me wrong: this is a wonderful platform and a great way for writers (profitable or not) to get their work out to the world without the headaches inherent in starting your own site. But as it exists, it is not a space where good, quality *writing* succeeds and thrives, and I think that is a damn shame.
